FKC-Lake Shore
Lake Shore, Inc., was established in Marquette, MI, in 1858 to support the Upper Peninsula’s iron and copper mining companies. In the 150 years since, Lake Shore has built a good reputation throughout the mining industry while expanding into other industries, including governmental defense contracting. With this expansion, Lake Shore Mining, Inc., became a separate operating group within Lake Shore, Inc. Lake Shore, Inc. was purchased in 1992 by The Oldenburg Group, a Milwaukee-based corporation that manufactures and markets a diverse line of lighting, industrial, maritime, and mining machinery.
Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) and Lake Shore enjoyed a good working relationship for more than 25 years as customers, suppliers, and partners to each other. Lake Shore provided FKCI with skips, cages, and safety devices for its construction projects, and FKCI provided Lake Shore with electrical control systems for its vertical conveyors and elevators. FKCI’s ability to provide quality hoists and control systems, coupled with Lake Shore’s headframes, cages, and shaft steel, allowed for joint venture opportunities to provide clients with complete turnkey hoisting solutions.
FKCI came to realize that it shared a great many synergies with Lake Shore and, if the companies were combined, they could offer complete turnkey solutions to valued customers. In 2001, FKCI reached an agreement with The Oldenburg Group to acquire the product lines, patents, marketing agreements, and certain assets of Lake Shore Mining, Inc. FKCI continued to employ key engineering and marketing staff of Lake Shore Mining, Inc., and concurrently formed the FKC-Lake Shore Division to pursue the business activities formerly carried on by Lake Shore Mining, Inc. Those activities include hoisting systems and related equipment, vertical conveyance systems, elevators and related equipment, brakeman cars, and field services.
